Real-time Prediction for Flood Warning and Management
نویسنده
چکیده
Within the context of predicting and mitigating flood hazards, this paper motivates the development of innovative ideas in three engineering research areas: (a) spatially-distributed quantitative rainfall prediction, (b) spatially-distributed flow prediction, and (c) long-term flow prediction for water resources management. Design, operational implementation, real-time testing, and training of field personnel should be the cornerstone of such development for realizing the potential benefits in these fields.

Recent Advances in the Development of Flood Forecasting and Warning Services in Australia
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology is the lead national agency for flood forecasting and warning services in Australia, working in partnership with agencies at the State and Local Government levels. These services cover river basins with response times ranging from 6-12 hours through to very large basins with flood travel times of the order of weeks. Flash flood warning services are also prov...

Flash floods are considered to be one the worst kind of hazard. They are characterized by their suddenness, rarity, small scale, heavy rain and peak discharge, unpredictable, fast and violent movement. It has severe effects on human society in the form life losses, damages to property, roads, communication and on natural settings. Advances in hydrology, meteorology, engineering, using of GIS an...
متن کاملRainfall-runoff process modeling using time series transfer function
Extended Abstract 1- Introduction Nowadays, forecasting and modeling the rainfall-runoff process is essential for planning and managing water resources. Rainfall-Runoff hydrologic models provide simplified characterizations of the real-world system. A wide range of rainfall-runoff models is currently used by researchers and experts. These models are mainly developed and applied for simulation...
متن کاملEstimating real-time predictive hydrological uncertainty
Flood risk can be reduced by means of flood forecasting, warning and response systems (FFWRS). These systems include a forecasting subsystem which is imperfect, meaning that inherent uncertainties in hydrological forecasts may result in false alarms and missed events. This forecasting uncertainty decreases the potential reduction of flood risk, but is seldom accounted for in estimates of the be...
متن کاملA Real-Time Measurement System for Long-Life Flood Monitoring and Warning Applications
A flood warning system incorporates telemetered rainfall and flow/water level data measured at various locations in the catchment area. Real-time accurate data collection is required for this use, and sensor networks improve the system capabilities. However, existing sensor nodes struggle to satisfy the hydrological requirements in terms of autonomy, sensor hardware compatibility, reliability a...
